Already a month of school has gone by. The children are busy learning the routines and expectations of being in grade one. Each morning, we begin the day with our Morning Meeting. In this important event, everyone has a chance to participate and be heard. We practice our oral language as well as our reading skills. We sing and play with language.
We have been hard at work on building our vocabularies and making first attempts at labelling objects this year. Ask your child to tell you about their Alphabet Books. Show them this picture if they don't know what you're talking about:
In math, we have been exploring Sorting and Patterning using manipulatives of all sorts. The following photos are just a few examples of some of the materials we are using right now to identify, create and reproduce patterns.:
We have also visited the Library. When you are finished enjoying your Library Books, please return them to school. We will keep them in the classroom until Library Day, which is on Day 2. Right now Day 2 falls on Wednesdays. Please be sure to return the books before Wednesday. The children will not be allowed to take new books if the old ones aren't returned on time. Thank you for helping them remember their books.
We also took part in our school-wide Terry Fox Run. Stay tuned for the grand total of our fundraising efforts. Thank you to everyone who donated to this important cause.
REMINDERS:
-School starts at 8:40 am. Please be on time. When the children are late, they miss important information and being a part of our daily Morning Meeting which can impact their learning.
-Please ensure that your child has enough rest. Children aged 5-7 require between 9 and 11 hours of sleep every night for their brains to function well.
-Having breakfast before school gets the body and brain ready to learn. We do have a Breakfast Program every morning in the school between 8:00 and 8:30 am. If you would like your child to take part in this program, please get a form in the school Office.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
-Wednesday, October 8, 2014- Trip to Whittamore's Farm- Permission Form will be coming home with your child. Please fill it in and return it to school ASAP.
Best,
Ms. Gladman
